Birkenhead, Auckland

Our team worked on this Category A Heritage building along side our partners Hype Builders.

The building was constructed in 1912 by architect Fred Souster and builders Pattison and Brookes. The old Hellaby butcher's shop occupied the site until 1911, after which it moved to the rear of this building. (Information from Heritage Unit, North Shore City Council). This building was also known as the Marinovic Building. It became 'Old Salt Antiques Limited' in 1983 around the time this photgraph was taken, and became the Marinovic family's coffee shop in 1994. It remained a cafe, and as of 2017 it is the 'Ravenhill' cafe, named after the nineteenth century Birkenhead property of mapmaker F.W. Hammond.
